FAQ

About VANME

What is VANME and what do you do?

VANME is a Hamburg-based manufacturer of custom campervans. We convert panel vans into custom-built motorhomes, crafted with attention to detail, the highest quality standards, and a keen sense of aesthetics. Off-the-shelf solutions are not our goal: Every vehicle is one-of-a-kind, designed, built, and finished all under one roof.

About VANME

Who is behind VANME?

Behind VANME are Max and Arne. Max came up with the original idea in 2015, and Arne joined in 2019. Here’s what our website says about the two of them: same values, same goals, same standards, same hairstyle—but completely different tastes in music. But they wouldn’t be anything without their team of amazing people and absolute professionals. Max Löber is the CEO of VANME GmbH.

About VANME

How long has VANME been around?

The idea was born in 2015 during a long trip through Australia. In 2017, it gave rise to the VANME workshop—initially focused on converting panel vans. In 2019, a second partner joined the team, and since then, VANME has evolved into a workshop capable of fulfilling nearly any customer request.

About VANME

Where is VANME located?

Our factory is located in Hamburg, on Germany’s largest river island. Address: VANME GmbH, Peutestraße 51b, 20539 Hamburg. Made in Hamburg.

About VANME

Does VANME also manufacture and ship outside of Germany?

Currently, we manufacture and ship only within Germany.

Inquiries & Project Workflow

What is the inquiry list or wish list?

On the Tuning, Vehicles, Trailers, and Partners pages, you can save models, categories, and configurations for your inquiry—for example, “Save the BOBO XL+ trailer for your inquiry” or a BOBO configuration you’ve put together in the configurator. The saved items are transferred to the contact form as a wish list; you can manage them via the wish list menu.

Inquiries & Project Workflow

What happens if I want to make a change in the middle of the renovation?

Requests for changes made after installation work has begun may result in additional costs, which must be borne by the client.

Inquiries & Project Workflow

Are the specified completion and renovation dates binding?

Any delivery, modification, and completion dates we provide are non-binding. Conversely, you agree to have your vehicle ready on time by the agreed-upon date—details regarding this are set forth in Section 7 of the Terms and Conditions.

Inquiries & Project Workflow

How do I get a firm price?

Binding price quotes are generally provided in the form of a written estimate, in which all details and the materials required for production are listed individually along with their prices. All cost items are based on historical data. We use these figures to try, as best we can, to provide a binding estimate for projects with uncertain, individual characteristics. The resulting cost estimate provides the customer with a clear and highly transparent guideline. Deviations may always occur due to commissioned services for which there are no historical data available yet. In such situations, we consult with our customers and coordinate the next steps.

Inquiries & Project Workflow

Can I have my own van customized?

Yes, you can bring your own car, or we can help you buy a new one. Please contact us so we can discuss your needs and preferences.

Inquiries & Project Workflow

Why can the effort and timeframe only be roughly estimated at the beginning?

Because every VANME is truly one-of-a-kind. In professional circles, this is referred to as the “Cone of Uncertainty”: The more unique a project is, the greater the initial planning uncertainties regarding effort and time. With every decision, the scope narrows and becomes clearer, until, in the end, a one-of-a-kind piece is created that fits you perfectly.

Inquiries & Project Workflow

How does a campervan project work at VANME?

The process of customizing a campervan is clearly structured:

  1. Inspiration – Through in-depth conversations, we gather your wishes, ideas, and visions.
  2. Concept – an initial draft outlines the broad strokes and sets the direction.
  3. Attention to detail – using state-of-the-art 3D technology, we visualize the project and fine-tune the materials, functions, and design step by step.
  4. Manufacturing – State-of-the-art machinery and precision craftsmanship make your vehicle one of a kind.
  5. Pickup – a campervan tailored just for you.
Vehicles, Design & Interior

Does the job include any structural modifications to the vehicle?

Yes. Modifications to the vehicle that are necessary for structural reasons—such as running new cables or drilling a hole in the body to secure fixtures—are considered to be contractually agreed upon. We install all fixtures in accordance with accepted engineering standards.

Vehicles, Design & Interior

Are the installations inspected and approved by TÜV?

Yes. After the conversion, the vehicles are presented to the TÜV, and the modifications are inspected and approved by the TÜV. The inspection agency comes to our production facility, inspects the vehicles, and issues the inspection report on-site.

Vehicles, Design & Interior

Do you also do bodywork and tuning?

Yes. Bodywork that has been TÜV-certified guarantees quality and safety, while exclusive interior and exterior tuning gives the vehicle style, character, and presence.

Vehicles, Design & Interior

What makes VANME’s furniture design special?

In 2019, we developed the “Square Circle” concept, setting a new benchmark in vehicle interiors: VANME builds rounded furniture—furniture crafted from a single piece. Transitions flow seamlessly rather than breaking abruptly; lines run harmoniously; and seams are barely visible.

Vehicles, Design & Interior

What materials do you use?

Fine materials such as the finest leather, teak, or walnut—the curves of the real wood are sanded and shaped by hand.
The furniture is made of European poplar plywood. It is dimensionally stable and very lightweight. These plywood panels are then laminated on both sides with HPL in the desired finish.

Vehicles, Design & Interior

How many sleeping and seating spaces are available?

That depends entirely on the floor plan. Examples from our Single Pieces lineup: BEDROCK with 4 sleeping berths and 7 seats, Bunnylounge 2.0 with 3 sleeping berths and 4 seats, Dream Dancer with 2 sleeping berths and 2 seats, and Multi Racer with 4 sleeping berths and 4 seats.

Vehicles, Design & Interior

What base vehicles does VANME use?

Our published projects are based on vehicles such as the Mercedes Benz Sprinter, Volkswagen Crafter, Fiat Ducato, Iveco Daily, VW T6.1 Transporter, and Mercedes-Benz EQV, among others. Any vehicle with sufficient space for the desired interior configuration can serve as a base vehicle.

Vehicles, Design & Interior

What is the difference between “Masterpieces” and “Single Pieces”?

Masterpieces is our gallery of uniqueness—vehicles that go far beyond mere function and in which technology and emotion, precision and freedom come together (including Niffler, La Onda, and Light Arrow). Single Pieces are our one-of-a-kind campervans: not off-the-shelf vehicles, but custom-built conversions that showcase the diversity of our work (including BEDROCK, Bunnylounge 2.0, Straight Edge, Dream Dancer, Hulk, Cosy Mate, and many more).

Delivery, Maintenance & Warranty

What do the weight specifications mean—total mass, tolerance, passengers?

The technically permissible gross vehicle weight (e.g., 3,500 kg) is a manufacturer’s specification that the vehicle must not exceed; exceeding this limit while driving constitutes an administrative offense. For the mass in running order, a legally permissible and industry-standard tolerance of ±5% is allowed. For the mass of passengers, a flat rate of 75 kg per designated seat is applied (the driver’s mass is already included). We recommend weighing the loaded motorhome on a non-automatic scale before every trip.

Delivery, Maintenance & Warranty

Can I transfer my installed accessories to another vehicle later?

That depends on the expansion plan you’ve chosen:

With the right planning, modular furniture can be transferred to another vehicle. This flexible solution is ideal if you want to remain flexible in the future.

Custom interior fittings are tailored to your vehicle and installed with precision. The fittings make optimal use of the available space and therefore cannot be transferred to other vehicles without modifications. That’s the VANME standard—Your van, your solution.

We’d be happy to discuss with you which option is right for you.

Delivery, Maintenance & Warranty

Does the warranty also cover purchased components, such as a refrigerator?

For purchased items, the standard manufacturer’s warranties remain in effect. Warranty claims against us apply only to fixtures manufactured by us and their installation. We assume no warranty or liability for materials, parts, and components installed by the customer or third parties.

Delivery, Maintenance & Warranty

What are the warranty terms?

In the event of defects, we shall, at our discretion, provide warranty coverage by repairing the item or manufacturing a new one. If the repair fails, the client may demand a price reduction or rescission; the right to rescission does not apply in the case of minor breaches of duty. Claims for defects are subject to a one-year statute of limitations. VANME does not provide guarantees in the legal sense.

Delivery, Maintenance & Warranty

What is the 1,000-km service check?

We offer to have the vehicle inspected by us again after 1,000 km to determine whether any adjustments are necessary. This service check is free of charge.

Important: If this service is not accepted, our warranty obligation is limited in that we assume no liability for functional limitations or cosmetic defects that could have been prevented by the inspection.

Delivery, Maintenance & Warranty

Why does real wood in a vehicle require special attention?

Real wood is not typically used in vehicle construction, but it can be used provided that the care instructions provided at the time of delivery are followed. In some cases, the wood may warp and require touch-ups. Please report any such issues immediately so that we can take the necessary steps.

Delivery, Maintenance & Warranty

What will I receive at the handover?

Upon delivery of the modified vehicle, each customer receives a delivery report and a briefing that includes care instructions for the materials used. These care instructions become part of the contract.

Off-Road, Suspension & Partners

Who are VANME’s partners?

Under “Collabs & Partners,” we’d like to introduce the following partners: PS Sattlerei, Kreavans, 4x4proyect, delta4x4, Schnierle, SCA, Deimann Fahrwerkstechnik, Strands Lighting Division, and Revotion.

Off-Road, Suspension & Partners

Can I have a suspension system installed retroactively?

Yes. The systems can also be retrofitted into existing RVs. To do this, we analyze the vehicle’s current condition, its unloaded weight, and your intended use, recommend the appropriate system, and handle the installation and fine-tuning—including wheel alignment, a test drive, and a follow-up inspection.

Off-Road, Suspension & Partners

Why does the stock suspension reach its limits when the camper is removed?

Vans such as the Sprinter, Crafter, or TGE are designed as commercial vehicles—for light to medium loads on paved roads. A fully equipped camper consistently operates close to its gross vehicle weight rating: the kitchen, water system, pop-up roof, lithium batteries, insulation, and cabinetry quickly add up to 600 to 900 kg of additional weight, and this is compounded by a higher center of gravity. Typical consequences include spongy steering, significant body roll, a sagging rear end, reduced comfort on long trips, and accelerated wear and tear.

Off-Road, Suspension & Partners

What components turn a campervan into an off-road camper?

On the homepage, we highlight three areas: off-road headlights for optimal visibility, suspension optimization and lift kits for greater driving comfort and off-road capability, and the Signature Rim for added style. These are complemented by craftsmanship of the highest order, well-engineered suspension solutions, and all-wheel-drive technology.

BOBO – the camping trailer

Is BOBO also suitable for everyday work?

Yes. In just a few simple steps, all modules can be detached from the floor panel—turning the camping trailer into a fully functional utility trailer. The kitchen module can be used as a mobile workbench, to charge devices via the E-module, or to transport a pallet or materials; the outdoor shower lets you freshen up or mix materials.

BOBO – the camping trailer

How does the power supply work in the BOBO?

At the heart of the E-Module is an EcoFlow DELTA MAX Power Station with 2,048 Wh capacity, 2,400 W output power, four AC outlets with priority switching, and USB ports, plus an LED gooseneck light. Charging is done via the trailer plug or compatible solar panels—a foldable 200-watt solar panel is also included. The MaxiFreezer 50 compressor cooler (9-liter refrigerator compartment, 41-liter freezer compartment) is mounted at the front of the E-Module.

BOBO – the camping trailer

What add-ons are available for BOBO?

Selectable via the configurator: Maggiolina hard-shell roof tent (Small X-Long for both models, Medium X-Long for the XL+), Shadow awning, E-Module, solar bag, MaxiFreezer cooler, fold-out outdoor kitchen, Maxx Dome roof vent with lighting, Trelino EVO L dry-separating toilet, outdoor shower, shower/toilet tent, and gas cylinder holder. A bike rack is available only for the BOBO XL+.

BOBO – the camping trailer

How well does BOBO handle off-road conditions?

The off-road wheel set, featuring rugged all-terrain tires, high-quality aluminum rims, and independent suspension, ensures traction and a smooth ride—on gravel, sand, or rocky terrain. The entire housing is made of high-quality metal; the hinged lid with gas-pressure struts makes loading and unloading easy.

BOBO – the camping trailer

How are the modules attached, and how does that affect the ride?

The modules are mounted on a specially designed rail base, which VANME assembles by hand with precision. They are secured on the sides with air-pressure-based mounting pads. This ensures that shocks, vibrations, and torsional forces are transmitted to the modules only minimally—for a smooth ride that protects the equipment, even on uneven terrain.

BOBO – the camping trailer

How quickly can the modules be removed and installed?

All modules can be removed in just a few simple steps—easily, precisely, and without tools, by two people. This transforms the fully equipped camping trailer into a transport or utility trailer in no time at all, making the full cargo capacity available.

BOBO – the camping trailer

What modules does BOBO have?

Four basic modules: Cooking Station ( pull-out kitchen unit on a lockable heavy-duty slide-out, storage compartment for spices, pull-out drawer, pass-through compartment, lockable service flap), Underground Garage ( large storage compartment, two lockable heavy-duty slides rated up to 220 kg, grid floor), The Long Arm ( over 2-meter-long slide-out, mount for fresh water canister) and The Right Arm of the Cooking Station ( space for a grill or luggage, two heavy-duty slides, grid floor).

BOBO – the camping trailer

Can I drive 100 km/h in a BOBO?

Depending on the configuration, the BOBO is designed for a top speed of 100 km/h, allowing even longer trips to be completed comfortably and safely. Both models come equipped with brakes.

BOBO – the camping trailer

What kind of driver’s license do I need for BOBO?

BOBO is available in two weight classes: 1,000 kg or 1,300 kg gross vehicle weight. With a Class B driver’s license, you may tow a trailer with a gross weight of up to 750 kg—or more, provided the combined weight of the towing vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg. For heavier combinations, a Class BE license is required.
